Leviticus 26:12 And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.
As the book of Leviticus starts to wind down, there is a theme in the last two chapters. Give yourself wholehearted to the Lord, and He will bless you, but if you turn away from Him and serve other gods, there will be consequences. For the people who do not know God or His word, this seems harsh, and many would say it is forced love. “You either love me and do what I tell you, or you will be sorry”!
In order to understand this better, we need to rewind to the time the Hebrews were in captivity. They cried out to God for deliverance from Egypt and their taskmasters. God sends Moses to Pharaoh with a message to let God’s people go. Pharaoh refuses, and the Hebrews see ten judgments upon their captors. The last judgment was the firstborn's death in every house that did not have the lamb’s blood on the doorposts. Pharaoh’s son dies and the slaves are set free for the first time in four hundred years.
They are overjoyed as they leave the city where they were slaves for so long. They once again see the power of God as the Egyptian soldiers pursue them. The Hebrews walk through the Red Sea upon dry ground and watch their enemies perish as the walls of water crash down upon them. How many miracles has God done in our life? How many times did He open the door for us to walk out of a bad situation into a good one? God loved His people and was going to lead them into the land of promise, but He was not able to.
Why? Because the people who witnessed His strength, still did not believe Him and complained about everything. God was showing the Hebrews that He was going to be a Father to them, a savior, provider, protector, and bless them with freedom. How did they repay His kindness? They said it was a better life as a slave back in Egypt. Instead of focusing on what God was doing, they chose to be discontent. Murmuring and never satisfied. God wants us to walk with Him in relationship.
Time after time, God was longsuffering. He wanted a relationship with His people based on trust and love. He desired to be their one true God and walk among them. He wanted to be a blessing to them and their children. There is so many similarities today. God knows our carnal nature is exceedingly wicked. Sin has and will always be the issue. So many people want to serve the Lord, but under their own terms. We live in the disposition of grace today (Amen) and yet God knows that if we turn from following Him, we will soon be going back to our Egypt. Our old lifestyle, our old hangouts, our secret sins. The sinful nature of man has no limits.
He gives us the same promise as He spoke to His people back in Leviticus 26:12. He wants to be first in our lives and walk with us in a relationship. We too need to follow His word in faith and obedience. I have heard many people say this, “God knows my heart.” That is true, but it can never become an excuse for sin. “I get drunk, but God knows I love Him”. “I live with my girlfriend, but God understands we do this because we do not want to be a statistic of divorce.” “I will never forgive that person, but God knows what they did to me”.
Am I saying we have to live perfect? Absolutely not. I make as many mistakes as the next guy, but they are mistakes. I do not put a red ribbon on sin and try to make it acceptable to God. I repent and ask God to forgive me and help me become an overcomer. When we call evil good, we are in a bad position my friends. Sin will always separate us from Jesus. Sin will slowly make your heart hard and God’s voice dull in your spirit. I have to live one day at a time and follow Jesus. His word needs to flow into me daily. I need to worship Him daily, and I need to seek Him in prayer daily. I do this because I love Him.
I could not help but to think about how there are so many similarities of people in the Old Testament and us today when I finished the book of Leviticus. I am grateful we do not live under the levitical law, but what was true for them is also true for us. There are blessings for the born again child of God, there are also consequences when we leave Him and set out on our own path. I pray that each of us has gratitude instead of a bad attitude. He saved me and I praise Him for it. He keeps me and I love Him for it. He calls me His own and I worship Him for it. I will do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him.
In Jesus Name.
