Honoring Our Heroes on Memorial Day

Honoring Our Heroes on Memorial Day

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a solemn day dedicated to honoring the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is a time for Americans to reflect on the sacrifices made by military personnel in defense of the country’s freedoms and values.

The Origins of Memorial Day

Memorial Day has its roots in the aftermath of the Civil War, a conflict that claimed more lives than any other in American history. Initially observed as "Decoration Day," the holiday was created to remember American service members who lost their lives in all conflicts and to honor those who lost their lives in the Civil War by placing flowers on their graves (LaSpada, 2000).

A congressional act in 1971 made Memorial Day a national holiday, guaranteeing the country three days to celebrate and partake in a range of customs, such as visiting cemeteries and memorials, hosting family get-togethers (lots of barbecues), and taking part in parades. Every year at 3 p.m. local time (many of us don't know this today), the National Moment of Remembrance prompts all citizens to pause and consider the real significance of the day (Wikipedia contributors, 2024).

Remembering Roger H.C. Donlon: A Medal of Honor Recipient

As we honor our fallen heroes this Memorial Day, it is fitting to highlight the extraordinary bravery and sacrifice of individuals like Roger H.C. Donlon. Who was Roger Donlon? Well, continue on to find out more about this great hero, who died on January 25, 2024, at 89 years of age.

Roger H.C. Donlon: A Profile in Courage

Born in Saugerties, New York, on January 30, 1934, Roger H.C. Donlon first enlisted in the US Air Force in 1953. He then went on to join the US Army, where he distinguished himself as a soldier of extraordinary bravery (Veteran Tributes, n.d.).

A Historic Act of Valor

Captain Donlon's heroism is best remembered through his actions on July 6, 1964, in Nam Dong, South Vietnam. As the commander of a Special Forces detachment, Donlon and his team were subjected to a fierce attack by a significantly larger Viet Cong force. Despite being wounded multiple times, the courageous Captain Donlon led his men in a determined defense of their position. His leadership and bravery were pivotal in repelling the enemy attack, saving countless lives.

On December 5, 1964, Captain Roger H.C. Donlon received the Medal of Honor in recognition of his extraordinary bravery and selflessness (USA Patriotism! . . . Patriotic Video > Roger Donlon - Medal of Honor Recipient, n.d.-b). As a result of his actions during the Vietnam War, he became the first recipient of this prestigious award and the first member of the U.S. Army Special Forces to receive it (EduRank, 2024).

Legacy of a Hero

Roger Donlon's story is a powerful reminder of the courage and dedication of our military personnel. His actions exemplify the highest values of the United States Army and the sacrifices made by those who serve. Today, Donlon is remembered not only as a Medal of Honor recipient but also as an enduring symbol of the spirit and resilience of American soldiers.

Honoring All Who Serve

This Memorial Day, as we gather with family and friends, let us take a moment to remember heroes like Roger H.C. Donlon and the many others who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Their bravery ensures that we continue to enjoy the freedoms and values we hold dear. May their memory inspire us to uphold the principles for which they fought and remind us of the true cost of freedom.

The Ultimate Sacrifice

We pay tribute to the service and legacy of those who have served by living in a manner that mirrors their selflessness. Our gratitude goes out to all who have served, sacrificed, and given their lives for our country, granting us the gift of freedom.

While we honor those who have served, let's also remember to celebrate our Lord and Savior Jesus for His sacrificial love that redeemed our souls. Jesus Christ paid the ultimate price to save us from our sins.  Yes, it was our sins that were nailed to a rugged cross by a sinless Savior.  Let us praise, honor and give many thanks to the One that died for us as we honor Captain Roger H.C. Donlon and the many other heroes this Memorial Day.

Thank you to our heroes and thank you Jesus for dying for the whole world.

But God demonstrates His own love toward us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
