Presidents Day - Pray For Them Anyway
Who do we celebrate Presidents Day?
Presidents' Day, observed on the third Monday of every February, is a U.S. Federal holiday with deep historical significance. It's a day when we honor the former presidents of our nation, particularly George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. This holiday serves as a reminder of these leaders' pivotal roles in shaping our country's history and underscores the importance of leadership in national development. It's a time for us to step back from our daily routines, gather with our loved ones, and reflect on the rich history and enduring impact of the presidential legacy in the United States.
Pray For Our Leaders
Amidst the complexities of our political landscape, how can we best honor our President and leadership on this day? The answer lies in a universal call to prayer for our nation, its leaders, and our President. Regardless of our political affiliations, as believers, we are all encouraged to pray for those in authority over us. This scriptural principle references 1 Timothy, where we are instructed to pray and express gratitude for our leaders. While this may be challenging, especially when we disagree with governance, the essence of these prayers is not about approval but about interceding for their well-being and salvation, much like how we would pray for our loved ones.
We Are Instructed To Do So
The passage from 1 Timothy 2:1-2 reiterates the importance of this type of focused prayer:' Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.' The following verses emphasize God's divine intention for every person to be saved. This prompts us to focus our prayers on the well-being of our leaders this Presidents' Day as a tangible way to honor and support them.
"For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth." 1 Timothy 2:3-4
Love Your Enemies
For those who find it challenging to align with these sentiments amid disappointment with the current political climate, the verse from Matthew 5:44 is a powerful reminder of the Christian call to love and pray for even those who oppose us. It's important to understand that when we pray for our leaders, we advocate for them and the collective good of our nation and those who have made sacrifices for it, including the brave men and women who have given their lives in service. Ultimately, this act of prayer is a tribute to our Lord – our ultimate Authority – Who exemplified sacrificial love by dying for the sins of all. How could we not honor our Father in heaven and pray for those He loves and sacrificed for as well?
"But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you" Matthew 5:44
